Frequently Asked Questions About a Tanzania Holiday

Tanzania offers a wide range of cultural experiences. Visit traditional villages, learn about the culture of the Maasai or Chagga, meet the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes, or discover the history of Stone Town in Zanzibar. Spice tours and encounters with local communities also offer authentic insights into local life.

In Tanzania, you can experience an impressive array of wildlife – including the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), as well as giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles and numerous species of monkeys and antelopes. Depending on the region and time of year, you can also spot cheetahs, wild dogs and over 1,000 species of birds.

Swahili and English are the main languages spoken in Tanzania. In tourist areas, hotels and lodges, travellers usually get by fine with English. On request, we can also arrange German-speaking guides and drivers with additional language skills.

Yes, the national parks are very safe. Tanzania places the utmost importance on the safety of its visitors and the protection of nature. At the lodges and camps, qualified ‘Askaris’ (security guards) ensure that you can move about safely at all times. Furthermore, during the day you’ll always be accompanied by your experienced guide, who is highly skilled at reading the animals’ behaviour. Always follow the safety guidelines at the lodges and camps in the national parks. Never leave your room or tent at dusk or in the dark without first requesting to be accompanied by an Askari.

As we tailor every safari individually, there is no fixed package price. The price depends heavily on the time of year, the number of travellers and the chosen accommodation category. As a rough guide for a high-quality, privately led safari including vehicle, guide, national park fees and full board, you should expect to pay around 500 to 900 euros per person per day.

Yes, German, Austrian and Swiss nationals require a visa to enter Tanzania (and Zanzibar). This currently costs 50 US dollars per person. You can either apply for the visa conveniently online in advance as an ‘e-visa’ or obtain it directly on arrival at the airport in Tanzania (‘visa on arrival’). Travellers to Zanzibar must also take out compulsory insurance. This costs 44 US dollars per person.

Tanzania is one of the most romantic travel destinations in the world. The combination of the wild solitude of the bush and the exclusive beach resorts on Zanzibar, Pemba or Mafia is unbeatable for a honeymoon. Many lodges offer special honeymoon packages, such as private candlelit dinners under the African starry sky or a bush massage.

As we organise tailor-made, private trips, the rule is: the earlier, the better. If you’d like to travel during the peak season (June to October or over Christmas), we recommend booking 9 to 12 months in advance. The reason for this isn’t the vehicles or guides, but the small, exclusive tented camps, which often have only 8 to 12 tents and book up quickly. For the rest of the year, booking 3 to 6 months in advance is sufficient.
